What is DSPM? Data security posture management explained
What does a DSPM tool do?
A DSPM tool discovers data stores in your cloud accounts, samples or scans their contents, and classifies what it finds: personal data, payment data, credentials, health data and so on.
It then joins that classification with the store's configuration and access: is it encrypted, is it public, which roles and workloads can read it. The result is a list of data risks ranked by what the data is, not only by how the store is configured.
Many DSPM tools also flag shadow copies: snapshots, backups and exports that hold the same data in places with weaker controls. Data used to train or ground AI models is a newer area some vendors include.
When do you need DSPM?
- Sensitive data lives in many cloud stores owned by different teams.
- You must show regulators where personal data is and who can access it.
- AI projects are pulling data into new stores and pipelines.
- Posture findings on storage are too many to fix without knowing what each store holds.
When is DSPM not enough?
DSPM describes data at rest and who can reach it. It does not stop data in motion the way data loss prevention tools on email or endpoints do, and it does not fix permissions by itself. Pair it with CIEM for the who-can-reach part.
Which finder answers point to DSPM?
- +4 if you protect sensitive data in cloud storage and databases
- +1 if you protect AI services, models or agents
Which vendors describe DSPM?
8 of 9 vendors describe DSPM on the pages we read, and 1 are not in our sources.

Not in our sources is not a no. Ask the vendor, and send us a public source if one exists.
What should you ask a DSPM vendor?
- Which data stores and services are scanned, and is data copied out of your account to do it?
- Which data types are classified out of the box, and can you add your own?
- Is DSPM included in the platform price or a separate tier?
- Does it show which identities and workloads can reach each sensitive store?
Frequently asked questions
How is DSPM different from DLP?
DSPM finds and classifies data at rest in cloud stores and shows its exposure. DLP watches data in motion, such as uploads and email, and blocks transfers.
Does DSPM need agents?
Generally not; it works through cloud APIs and scans data stores. Ask each vendor whether data leaves your account during scanning.
Is DSPM in Microsoft Defender for Cloud?
Yes, as part of the paid Defender CSPM plan, not the free Foundational CSPM tier.
